Spice up your fall recipes!

Lately I have been seeing a lot of great recipes for traditional fall foods. You know… the ones we make for Thanksgiving or on into December and January. It made me think about how much I love Thieves Vitality! A couple of weeks ago I got my hands on some fresh raw apple cider. It was delicious, but SO MUCH BETTER once I warmed it up in a kettle and added a drop of Thieves Vitality! Oh my – YUM! I loved the thought that I was supporting my immune system while warming my tummy (and hands while holding the mug)!

Have you ever explored the possibilities of using your essential oils to boost flavor in your cooking and baking? It is so easy and inexpensive too.  Yes, there are essential oils that are approved by the FDA as “Generally Regarded As Safe for internal consumption (GRAS). Most brands are not approved for internal use, but Young Living has a line called Vitality, that are specifically labeled and safe for internal use!

I remember the time I first discovered this concept. I was making a recipe that called for fresh-squeezed organic lime juice. To have that would have required me to drive 45 minutes to the nearest store where I could purchase an organic lime. Not happening! Then I remembered I had some Lime Vitality essential oil. SCORE! So convenient and just perfect.

I’ve used this trick when I need fresh nutmeg, ginger, clove. Well, you get the idea!

I do have to mention that the essential oils are very potent so you must go very easy on this. Some might require that you only dip a toothpick to get just the right amount. Others you might need a drop or maybe 4-6 drops. It just depends. So the rule is “less is more.” You can always add more, but you can’t take it out after it’s in! And you surely don’t want to make six more batches just to tone down the flavor if you added too many drops! I have heard for example, that one drop of peppermint yields the same effect as 28 cups of peppermint tea. Yowza! Now that’s potent!

I have taught classes on the topic of cooking with oils and if that interests you, please send me an inquiry. Perhaps we can schedule a video conference for you and a few of your friends who love to cook!

Supporting your body with essential oils

For the past several weeks we have talked about a few basic things everyone should know before using essential oils. Now, let’s briefly look at 10 essential oils that are in my personal self-care kit and how they can be building blocks to support every part of the human body.

Muscle and Bone Support

PanAway – One of my favorites after exercise when my muscles are sore, or if I get a boo-boo that hurts! It has a safety cap, so that reminds you to use caution with small children.

Copaiba – Supports overall wellness, before and after a workout especially on moving parts. It has a very light aroma, so is especially nice to use in a gym.

Digestive Support

Peppermint Vitality – A great addition to your water. But remember it is very potent, so just one drop in a gallon of pure water is sufficient. If you have a gurgling tummy, take a drink of your peppermint water and then tap your cheeks. It’s amazing how good you feel after doing that!

DiGize — Is very supportive to the intestinal system. Rubbing a drop between the thighs or on the abdomen provides comfort if you eat too much and feel a little upset.

Respiratory Support

Thieves Vitality – A great dietary supplement to support overall wellness, particularly during times of the year when we need to enhance our respiratory system.

RC – Makes a wonderful partner to Thieves to provide respiratory comfort. Diffuse it to provide a comforting atmosphere, or rub it on the feet or chest for direct absorption into the body. Asthmetics should use it on the feet and not on the chest.

Immune Support

Lemon Vitality – This simple and lovely oil has so many benefits and uses, but one that is often overlooked is how it supports a healthy immune system by helping improve pH balance in the body. It is a great addition to water.

Purification – Breathing clean air is so important when thinking of staying healthy. Diffusing this oil is literally a breath of fresh air! Not only are you helping clean the environment, but imagine how it is purifying the inside of your body as you absorb it’s wonderful benefits.

Skin and Emotional Support

Lavender – Known for its benefits to promote relaxation, it can be a great addition to a soothing bedtime bath. The additional benefit is how supportive it is to the skin. There are hundreds of ways to use Lavender. These are just two ideas.

Frankincense – The “king” of all oils. It is very widely used in many skin care products and seems to magically support the appearance of the skin. You can also diffuse or breathe it in to promote grounding and purpose when you want to connect with God.

Dust Allergies

Dust Mites be gone

Are you allergic to dust? Actually, if you are, you probably already know a lot about dust mites and their itty-bitty poop droppings, which are actually the problem! But did you know there is a natural and safe way to control and eliminate dust mites in your mattresses, carpet and furniture?

A 2014 study conducted in Thailand is very interesting. The researchers used a 2% solution of Clove essential oil in a 95% solution of ethyl alcohol. They concluded that Clove oil is “effective against all stages of live mites including mature and immature mites, larvae and egg stages when direct contact is made.”

Clove oil is a scent I enjoy. It is one of the ingredients in Thieves Spray. So I got to thinking that Thieves Spray would be a simple way to deal the death blow to those nasty mites!  So easy and safe, yet effective! Of course you could also make your own Dust Mite Spray with clove oil and alcohol. I prefer using grain alcohol like Vodka, because it is safer than rubbing alcohol.

So if you have a dust allergy, here are some ways to incorporate clove oil into your cleaning routine!

  • Try adding Thieves Household Cleaner to the washer when laundering bedding.
  • Dust with a solution of Thieves Household Cleaner instead of using commercial dusting products.
  • Clean your carpets with Thieves Household Cleaner.
  • Add clove oil to the carpet shampoo.
  • Spray your mattress once a week with a few sprays of Thieves Spray.
  • Diffuse Thieves or Clove oil in your home regularly.

Can you tell I love Thieves? Well, these are just a few ideas that come to mind. Perhaps you can think of others.

Oil pulling made easy

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Indian tradition that recently has received a lot of attention.

Traditionally, you simply swish an oil in your mouth, making sure to “pull” it between your teeth. You do this for about 20 minutes and then spit it out, making sure not to swallow the liquid. The idea is that the oil will “pull” toxins out of the mouth and that you should not swallow this, and thus ingest those toxins for your liver to have to process.

Many people will use coconut oil because of its beneficial properties. It has been shown to be helpful to support gum health.

The best time to do this is in the morning, and it is best to do it several days in a row to get improved benefits.

Remembering to do this isn’t always easy, but I discovered an easy way to remember. Young Living’s Thieves AromaBright Toothpaste has a coconut oil base! So I just take a pea-sized dab and start swishing, jump in the shower and swish away! After my shower, I spit it out and rinse my mouth. Then brush my teeth with the AromaBright Toothpaste.

I also discovered another way to kick it up a notch! Add a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil or Thieves Essential Oil, or both. WOW, does my mouth feel fresh after that! Give it a try! It’s a great way to start your day!

Aromatherapy Can Help Reduce Anxiety

Recently Dr. Mercola had some interesting comments on the topic of essential oils:

  • Many natural essential oils have anxiety-inhibiting effects, including sweet orange, bergamot, and lavender
  • One systematic review of aromatherapy among people with anxiety symptoms showed that most of the studies indicated positive effects to quell anxiety
  • Essential oils can be inhaled indirectly using a room diffuser, massaged into your skin (diluted in a carrier oil), or inhaled directly using an individual essential oil inhaler
  • Aromatherapy has also shown promise for pain relief, nausea, vomiting, memory, and migraine headaches

Staying well

Flu season is here and yes, I have been exposed, just like everyone else.  The good news is all my hard work over the past few years to support my immune system seems to be paying off!  Recently, when my husband brought home some unwanted germs, I started to diffuse Thieves essential oil in the house immediately!  We both used Thieves Spray in our throats to head off the crud at the pass. I applied ImmuPower to my feet, and sucked on a Thieves Lozenge each evening at bedtime. Can’t forget the vitamin C either! So far so good!  I’m staying well!

Cleaning doesn’t have to be a dirty word!

It’s been mighty cold where I live the past few weeks. When you are all cooped up and don’t want to go out, you might find some extra time to do some deep cleaning.  OK, well that isn’t my idea of having fun, but there sure is a good feeling that you get when you have cleared clutter and everything is clean and organized!

I especially like using essential oils when I clean. Everything smells to fresh and I know there is a lot of germ-killing power in the oils too! I’m not a scientist, but as one friend says, I just know they work!

I ran across a few recipes for cleaning with essential oils you might enjoy trying…

*All-purpose Cleaner – by Louise Gruenberg

15 drops of Eucalyptus oil
15 drops of lemon oil
¼ cup of white vinegar
½ teaspoon of washing soda
Fill spray bottle with water

*Grapefruit Abrasive Cleaner – by Sandy Maine
50 drops of grapefruit oil
1 cup fine grade pumice
½ cup clay powder
¼ cup baking soda
½ cup boiling water for paste

*Creamy Cleaner – by Kim Erickson
10 drops of lemon oil
¼ cup washing soda
Castile soap liquid
paste consistency

*Recipes via: Gruenberg, Louise. “Make Your Kitchen Sparkle.” Herb Companion. Sept. 2012. 61-62.

Finally, my all-time favorite for cleaning EVERYTHING!
