Spice up your fall recipes!

Lately I have been seeing a lot of great recipes for traditional fall foods. You know… the ones we make for Thanksgiving or on into December and January. It made me think about how much I love Thieves Vitality! A couple of weeks ago I got my hands on some fresh raw apple cider. It was delicious, but SO MUCH BETTER once I warmed it up in a kettle and added a drop of Thieves Vitality! Oh my – YUM! I loved the thought that I was supporting my immune system while warming my tummy (and hands while holding the mug)!

Have you ever explored the possibilities of using your essential oils to boost flavor in your cooking and baking? It is so easy and inexpensive too.  Yes, there are essential oils that are approved by the FDA as “Generally Regarded As Safe for internal consumption (GRAS). Most brands are not approved for internal use, but Young Living has a line called Vitality, that are specifically labeled and safe for internal use!

I remember the time I first discovered this concept. I was making a recipe that called for fresh-squeezed organic lime juice. To have that would have required me to drive 45 minutes to the nearest store where I could purchase an organic lime. Not happening! Then I remembered I had some Lime Vitality essential oil. SCORE! So convenient and just perfect.

I’ve used this trick when I need fresh nutmeg, ginger, clove. Well, you get the idea!

I do have to mention that the essential oils are very potent so you must go very easy on this. Some might require that you only dip a toothpick to get just the right amount. Others you might need a drop or maybe 4-6 drops. It just depends. So the rule is “less is more.” You can always add more, but you can’t take it out after it’s in! And you surely don’t want to make six more batches just to tone down the flavor if you added too many drops! I have heard for example, that one drop of peppermint yields the same effect as 28 cups of peppermint tea. Yowza! Now that’s potent!

I have taught classes on the topic of cooking with oils and if that interests you, please send me an inquiry. Perhaps we can schedule a video conference for you and a few of your friends who love to cook!

Supporting your body with essential oils

For the past several weeks we have talked about a few basic things everyone should know before using essential oils. Now, let’s briefly look at 10 essential oils that are in my personal self-care kit and how they can be building blocks to support every part of the human body.

Muscle and Bone Support

PanAway – One of my favorites after exercise when my muscles are sore, or if I get a boo-boo that hurts! It has a safety cap, so that reminds you to use caution with small children.

Copaiba – Supports overall wellness, before and after a workout especially on moving parts. It has a very light aroma, so is especially nice to use in a gym.

Digestive Support

Peppermint Vitality – A great addition to your water. But remember it is very potent, so just one drop in a gallon of pure water is sufficient. If you have a gurgling tummy, take a drink of your peppermint water and then tap your cheeks. It’s amazing how good you feel after doing that!

DiGize — Is very supportive to the intestinal system. Rubbing a drop between the thighs or on the abdomen provides comfort if you eat too much and feel a little upset.

Respiratory Support

Thieves Vitality – A great dietary supplement to support overall wellness, particularly during times of the year when we need to enhance our respiratory system.

RC – Makes a wonderful partner to Thieves to provide respiratory comfort. Diffuse it to provide a comforting atmosphere, or rub it on the feet or chest for direct absorption into the body. Asthmetics should use it on the feet and not on the chest.

Immune Support

Lemon Vitality – This simple and lovely oil has so many benefits and uses, but one that is often overlooked is how it supports a healthy immune system by helping improve pH balance in the body. It is a great addition to water.

Purification – Breathing clean air is so important when thinking of staying healthy. Diffusing this oil is literally a breath of fresh air! Not only are you helping clean the environment, but imagine how it is purifying the inside of your body as you absorb it’s wonderful benefits.

Skin and Emotional Support

Lavender – Known for its benefits to promote relaxation, it can be a great addition to a soothing bedtime bath. The additional benefit is how supportive it is to the skin. There are hundreds of ways to use Lavender. These are just two ideas.

Frankincense – The “king” of all oils. It is very widely used in many skin care products and seems to magically support the appearance of the skin. You can also diffuse or breathe it in to promote grounding and purpose when you want to connect with God.

Oil pulling made easy

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Indian tradition that recently has received a lot of attention.

Traditionally, you simply swish an oil in your mouth, making sure to “pull” it between your teeth. You do this for about 20 minutes and then spit it out, making sure not to swallow the liquid. The idea is that the oil will “pull” toxins out of the mouth and that you should not swallow this, and thus ingest those toxins for your liver to have to process.

Many people will use coconut oil because of its beneficial properties. It has been shown to be helpful to support gum health.

The best time to do this is in the morning, and it is best to do it several days in a row to get improved benefits.

Remembering to do this isn’t always easy, but I discovered an easy way to remember. Young Living’s Thieves AromaBright Toothpaste has a coconut oil base! So I just take a pea-sized dab and start swishing, jump in the shower and swish away! After my shower, I spit it out and rinse my mouth. Then brush my teeth with the AromaBright Toothpaste.

I also discovered another way to kick it up a notch! Add a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil or Thieves Essential Oil, or both. WOW, does my mouth feel fresh after that! Give it a try! It’s a great way to start your day!

Got pests?

Every spring it seems like ants show up wanting to find a new home in my kitchen. One way to stop them from making a trail into the house is to mix about 20 drops of peppermint essential oil into an ounce or two of distilled water and spray the areas where the ants like to enter. Not only is this a safe, non-toxic alternative, but it also leaves your home smelling fresh and clean!

Here are some more ideas of ways to use peppermint in pest control:

What are other ways you use essential oils to control garden pests?

Death by Aspartame

Aspartame Dangers

I have long known the LONG LIST of negatives about aspartame and avoid it like the plague!

In a recent article, Dr. Mercola highlighted several facts you may or may not be aware of.

  • One of the largest studies of its kind found that drinking just two diet drinks a day can increase your risk of an early death from heart disease by 50 percent
  • Previous research looking at aspartame toxicity also found a clear association between aspartame consumption and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and leukemia
  • Despite being promoted for weight loss, foods and beverages with artificial sweeteners have never been proven to help weight loss. Studies that look at this actually find artificial sweeteners promote weight gain

One that caught my eye is the risk of early death linked to heart disease! Hmmm… Let’s see… You have diabetes or want to lose weight so you decide to drink diet sodas, Well how about adding a heart attack to that cocktail? Sorry, I’ll pass on that one!

So next time you order a diet soda, maybe stop and think about the risks. Maybe just order a glass of water and add a few drops of essential oil instead!  Here are some of my favorites:

Risks of mouth breathing

Breathing

Mouth breathing becomes necessary at times when the sinuses are blocked. But if you breathe through your mouth long enough that it becomes habit and normal for you, there may be some risks to your long term health. Dr. Mercola said in a recent article:  “Mouth breathing and resultant over-breathing elevates your blood pressure and heart rate and worsens asthma , allergies, rhinitis, sleep apnea, and deprives your heart, brain and other organs of optimal oxygenation.”

So the question is, what do you do when you can’t breathe through your nose and nothing your doctor has suggested has worked?

Granted, using an essential oil as a symptom reliever is not the final answer. There are many pieces to the puzzle, including diet and exercise.  Allergens are also a common factor. I am all about finding the root cause and solving that so the problem goes away permanently. But in the meantime you might want to consider these options that could help support healthy sinus passages…
