This Is Your Brain On Aspartame

Yesterday we looked at aspartame as associated with heart disease and other chronic conditions. Before I move on to a different subject, I want to also alert you to another reason to avoid aspartame…brain health.

Recently holistic health coach Margie King wrote about the effects of aspartame on the brain (click here to read the article). She started by reminding us of the many negative side effects of this deadly chemical. “Reported problems include headaches, migraines, vision problems, tinnitus, depression, joint pain, insomnia, heart palpitations, and muscle spasms,” 

What she said next made me sit up and take note: “Recently researchers from the University of North Dakota wanted to test the safe limits of aspartame over a short period of time.  They found that at just one half of the FDA’s “safe” acceptable daily intake, aspartame caused serious neuro-behavioral changes including cognitive impairment, irritable moods, and depression.” 

Wait a minute here!  Half the amount that the FDA says is safe causes serious problems in the brain? So who is the FDA protecting here? Me or some corporate giant? Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Then I think about all the brain fog going on among young people. Not to mention early onset Alzheimer’s, Dementia, depression, mood swings, and more. I say, let’s get off this train and the sooner the better! Go back and look at yesterday’s suggestions for essential oils that can be used to flavor your water and are healthy for you!

Cocoa and human health

  • “Cocoa contains biologically active substances that may affect human health: flavanoids, theobromine, and magnesium.” University of Leeds, UK. – PubMed April 2013
  • Phenylethylamine (PEA) that occurs in raw chocolate is created in the brain and released when we are in love. PEA plays a role in increasing focus and alertness.
  • Anandamide nicknamed the “Bliss Chemical” is a neurotransmitter isolated in raw cacao produced in the brain and released while feelings of happiness and excitement are dominant.
  • Cacao also contains inhibitors that decrease the breakdown of anandamide so that the effect of raw cocoa anandamide is more long-lasting.
