Healthy Lifestyle, Weight Management

Let’s get moving!

OK let’s face it. If you are more than a little overweight, exercise is not a topic you even want to hear about. But when it comes to weight management, burning more calories than you consume is paramount. Not only will physical activity help your journey, it also can help you maintain a healthy weight over time and thus help increase your chances of staying healthy and living longer.

Activity improves your overall mood and helps to relieve stress by releasing endorphins.

The key is to find a physical activity you can do and that you enjoy. Don’t feel that you have to prepare to run a marathon. If you have been a couch potato for most of your life, you will simply get discouraged and quit if you are not motivated to keep going. The exact amount of physical activity needed to lose or maintain weight can vary greatly from person to person, so talk to your health care provider about what’s right for you.

For me, I decided I could do two minutes of easy exercises every day and some is better than none. Soon that became a routine that I was successful at and I was pleased with my progress! Over time you can begin to add aerobic exercises that you enjoy. These might include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Biking slower than 10 mph
  • Water aerobics
  • Playing doubles tennis
  • Pushing a lawn mower
  • Gardening
  • Dancing

Next you might add some muscle strengthening activities:

  • Lifting weights
  • Using resistance bands
  • Doing push-ups, sit-ups, etc.
  • Practicing yoga
