Attitude of Gratitude

Photo

Today as we celebrate Thanksgiving, I started to think about how our attitude affects our wellness.

It is widely accepted that there is a strong connection between attitude and disease (dis-ease). I liked how Dr. Mercola summarized the positive connection between attitude, health, and success!

  • People who are thankful for what they have are better able to cope with stress, are happier, and better able to reach their goals
  • Gratitude is also associated with improved health, producing a number of measurable effects on various biological systems
  • One way to harness the positive power of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal, where you actively write down what you’re grateful for each day

This is definitely some very good advice.

My heart is filled with joy and gratitude today for all my special friends and family and for the love and support they share with me. May God bless you abundantly!

Of course, I can’t end my musing today without mentioning a couple of scents that I really love because they help me focus on keeping the right attitude… Gratitude and Joy! Check them out.

What are your dreams?

Many people live lives trapped someplace between crisis and survival. It is hard to break out of circumstances that seem to control us. But I know many who have overcome impossible obstacles and are living the life they have always imagined.

Stress reduction after surgery

I ran across a study that was actually done several years ago, but it caught my attention, so I decided to share it with you.

This study suggests that intraoperative music may decrease postoperative pain, and that postoperative music therapy may reduce anxiety, pain and morphine consumption. Click here for the abstract. The music that was used in the study was calming, soothing music, and the result was that there was a significantly greater decrease in the level of cortisol in the postoperative music group vs. the control group. Participants reported less pain and a lower need for morphine.

I got to thinking that if music alone had this much benefit, what would happen if soothing music was combined with the use of essential oils?

I remember when I had an MRI, I took along my own CD with some of my favorite soothing music. And I applied some essential oil to my neck area, temples, and over my heart. I was very peaceful throughout the time it took for the MRI.

What oils would be good ones to try? Well, everyone has their favorites in oils that calm them, just like everyone has their favorite genre of music. But I am thinking that stimulating music would be counterproductive to the relaxation objective in most cases. The same would be true for essential oils. For that reason, I would personally select from a list that could include Stress Away, Peace and Calming, Lavender, German Chamomile, Tranquil, Cedarwood, Valor, etc. The list will vary depending on your individual personality, what you might have available to you, etc.

So if you find yourself facing surgery, you might want to pack some tunes and some oils in your hospital bag! And I wish you a speedy recovery.
