The Forgotten Organ – Your Microbiota

Microbiota

A recent article by Dr. Mercola highlights the importance of gut health. Here are some key points he makes.

  • It helps to view your body as a “super organism” composed of a diverse array of symbiotic microorganisms. Proper balance of these microbes is essential for optimal physical and psychological health
  • Recent research suggests that many people are deficient in beneficial gut bacteria, making it a very important consideration if you’re not feeling well, physically or psychologically
  • Gut bacteria influence the processing and utilization of dietary nutrients; help protect against food borne disease, and can impact drug efficacy.
  • Certain microbiota and beneficial bacteria have been found to produce beneficial psychotropic signals such as serotonin and dopamine.

My favorite supplement to support healthy gut bacteria is Life 5.

Natural ways to quit smoking

Lime Juice and 8 Other Natural Ways To Quit Smoking

photo as seen on GreenMedInfo.com

The dangers of cigarette smoking are widely known and accepted. Often people desire to stop smoking but have difficulty doing so because of the addictive properties. Many people are turning to natural alternatives, and e-cigarettes are becoming quite popular. One person I know has been using e-cigarettes and informs me the major component in them is essential oils.  Although I am not a smoker and have not personally researched this, it seems to me that essential oils might be something to consider if you are looking for a natural alternative.

A study was done last year by members of the Department of Medicine at Srinakharinwirot University, Nakhon Nayok, Thailand. In this study, fresh lime juice was compared to nicotine gum for its effectiveness in reducing cravings. Their conclusion was that fresh lime can be used effectively as a smoking cessation aid, although not as good as nicotine gum in reducing cravings.

Where I live, fresh, good quality organic limes are sometimes not available. I got to thinking, why not consider lime essential oil?  Essential oils are very concentrated, and easy to use. A drop or two in a glass of water can give a fresh flavor to the water and may offer additional health benefits. A little research on the internet will give you quite a list of benefits of citrus oils!

Young Living also has a very powerful blend called Stress Away that contains Lime oil. It is one of my most favorite oils! Since people often light up a cigarette when they feel stressed, I wonder if this blend might offer a powerful, yet natural alternative? I surly would be interested to hear your results using Stress Away blend.

Some other oils you might like to research for their calming and uplifting qualities include Chamomile, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang and Clary Sage. I encourage you to do some research and see what natural options you may wish to consider.

Magnesium—The Missing Link to Better Health

Excerpts from a recent article by Dr. Mercola

  • An estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in magnesium. The health consequences of deficiency can be quite significant, and can be aggravated by many, if not most, drug treatments
  • Magnesium performs a wide array of biological functions, including activating muscles and nerves and creating energy in your body by attaching adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
  • Magnesium is very important for heart health. Excessive amounts of calcium without the counterbalance of magnesium can lead to a heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death
  • An ideal ratio between calcium and magnesium is thought to be 1:1. The recommended daily dose is around 700 milligrams of each
  • Anytime you’re taking any of the following: magnesium, calcium, vitamin D3, or vitamin K2, you need to take all the others into consideration as well, as these nutrients work synergistically with one another
  • Fluoride effectively drains your body of magnesium
